Adults

Adult life can place very different demands on the body, depending on lifestyle, occupation, hobbies and level of physical activity. Long hours at a desk, prolonged screen time, repetitive movements, physically demanding work, long periods of driving, high levels of stress or a lack of regular exercise can all contribute to muscular tension, postural adaptations and discomfort, potentially affecting movement, balance and the body’s overall equilibrium.

Over time, the accumulation of physical tension, together with stress, can also influence the nervous system and overall wellbeing, potentially affecting sleep, digestive comfort and the body’s stress response, including cortisol regulation. When stress becomes prolonged, it can affect the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, keeping the body in a heightened state of alert or “fight-or-flight” and making it more difficult to return to a state of rest, recovery and regulation.

Osteopathy takes these individual factors into consideration, using a range of techniques to address the body at different levels. Alongside musculoskeletal treatment, cranial and visceral approaches can be incorporated to maintain a holistic perspective, recognising the interconnected nature of the body’s different systems and their influence on one another. The aim is to support the body’s natural capacity for self-regulation and homeostasis, while addressing areas of tension, restricted mobility and imbalance to encourage greater ease of movement and promote overall comfort and wellbeing.

Osteopathic care may be complemented by advice on posture, exercise, ergonomics and lifestyle, and can work alongside other healthcare professionals when appropriate. Osteopathy can also form part of a preventative approach, helping maintain mobility and physical wellbeing, supporting the body’s overall balance and reducing the recurrence of common musculoskeletal problems.

Adults may benefit from osteopathic care for:

    • Back, neck and shoulder pain
    • Headaches, migraines and tension-related pain
    • Sciatica and nerve-related pain
    • Joint pain, stiffness or restricted mobility
    • Muscle tension, strains and sports-related injuries
    • Tendon and overuse injuries
    • Postural problems and work-related discomfort
    • Recurring pain or movement-related problems
    • Digestive discomfort, bloating and functional digestive issues
    • Constipation and altered bowel function
    • Pelvic and menstrual discomfort
    • Pregnancy-related musculoskeletal and pelvic discomfort
    • Jaw tension and temporomandibular disorders
    • Stress-related tension and difficulty relaxing
    • Sleep difficulties and tension-related sleep disturbance
    • Recovery following injury, surgery or periods of physical strain
    • Preventative care to maintain mobility, balance and physical wellbeing
